Summary

  • It would be better to look at the historical evolution of healer archetype to understand the “Fear of Doctors” concept, instead of focusing on medical procedures. A shaman, who is the healer in hunter-gatherer societies, heals the disease by experiencing it personally. Besides, since the shaman doesn’t want to be the object of the other’s desire, his/her identity is quite distant from that of the doctor in the modern societies, which was built as a success story. As his/her wound enables the healing, the wounded healer in Greek mythology also diff ers considerably from the modern unwounded doctor’s identity. To conclude, in the doctor-patient relationship, which mostly requires an absolute submission and confidence, the modern doctor’s perfect identity along with patient’s role that became unsafe, may underlie the fear of doctors.
