Hapishaneleri anlamak, onun işlevini ve içinde üretilen “şiddet” i anlamakla mümkündür. Hapishane, geçmiş tarihsel dönem cezalandırmalarından benzerlikleri dışında çok önemli farklı bir nosyon taşımaktadır. Günümüze dayanan modern zamanlar ceza infazı, “kapama cezası” temelinde kurgulanmış hapishanelere dayanmaktadır. Hapishane olgusu, süreli cezaların verildiği, belli bir yasayla belli bir süre için kişilerin hürriyetlerinden alıkonulması ve iddia odur ki “topluma yeniden kazandırılması” mantığı ile başlatılmış ve inşa edilmiştir. Hapishaneler, ağırlıkla burjuva demokrat görünümlü bütün devlet örgütlenmelerinin, topluma kabul ettirdikleri hukuk ve onun cezalandırma araçlarının başında gelmektedir. Hapishane, kurumsal bir yapıya, kavramsal bir ceza aracına işaret ederken aynı zamanda mekânsal anlamda da şiddetin üretildiği rejimi koruma birimleridir. Hapishaneler ve onun mekânsal evrimi, giderek türlerinin zaman içinde ‘geliştirilmesi’ devlet örgütlenmesinin güncel ihtiyaçlarına bağlıdır. Hapishane ve genel anlamda şiddet konsepti, yakın tarihe ve gelişmelere bağlı olduğu gibi; bugüne, yarına ve gelen zamanın ihtiyaçlarına göre şekil alan, her durumda kendini güncelleyen bir olgular bütününe işaret eder. Elbette ki sınıfsaldır, hegemonyanın tesisi içindir, kurumsallaştırılmıştır. Bugünün dünyasına aittir. Dolayısıyla, hapishane ezelden ebede tek bir cezalandırma kurumu değildir ve muhtemel gelecekte bu önemli yerini kaybedecektir

Understanding prisons is possible by understanding its function and the “violence” produced in it. The prison has a more different notion from the punishments of earlier epochs than its similarities to its precursors. The contemporary execution of punishment is based on prisons constructed on the basis of “enclosed punishment”. The phenomenon of prison was initiated and built with the logic of delivering temporary sentences, depriving people of their freedom for a certain period of time, and, it is claimed, “reintegrating them into society”. Prisons are the principal tools of the law and punishment imposed on society by the states, especially with a bourgeois-democratic appearance.While the prisons point to an institutional structure, and to a conceptual penal tool, they are also the units to protect the regime in which violence is produced in spatial terms. Prisons and their spatial evolution, the increasing “development” of their types over time, depends on the current needs of the state. The concept of prison in particular and violence in general is dependent on recent history and developments, it also points to a body of phenomena that takes shape according to today, tomorrow and the times to come, and updates itself in each situation. It is, of course, based on class relations, for the establishment of hegemony, and it is made institutional. It belongs to contemporary world. Therefore, the prison is not the single penal institution for all eternity and will likely lose its essential place in the future.
