An often overlooked dimension of digital technologies is the control of work and labour processes, and its impact on workers. Digital control tools are used to monitor workers’ activities and movements, dictate the pace of work, predict their behaviour, measure their productivity and assign tasks. The digitalisation of work also paves the way for the fragmentation, de-skilling and quantification of work, thereby increasing control over the labour process. The paper discusses the mechanisms by which digital technologies, in the form of capital, deepen the domination of labour, which have been ignored due to the influence of techno-progressive ideology. When digital tools of control are incorporated into the ongoing relationship between capital and workers in the workplace, they are articulated within and have their effects on existing structural inequalities and power relations. Since control is not a unilateral but a reciprocal relationship, the process of control takes place in a dynamic social field that is constantly being reconstituted and contested. With this approach, digital technologies are considered as an agenda of the political field beyond the technical field in which they are compressed.
