Mezuniyet sonrası eğitimde tıpta uzmanlık eğitimi ve doktora eğitimi söz konusudur. Her ikisi de akademik yükseltmeler açısından eşit sonuçlar doğurmaktadır. Ancak eğitimin organizasyonu ve sonuçları açısından aralarında ciddi farklar vardır. Her ne kadar Yüksek Öğretim Kurulu’nun genel kuralları geçerli ise de doktora eğitimleri yerel düzeylerde, üniversite rektörlüklerine bağlı enstitüler aracılığıyla yürütülmektedir. Giriş sınavları tümüyle yerel düzeyde yapılmakta, eğitim de aynı yoldan sürdürülmektedir. Tıpta uzmanlık eğitimi ise giriş sınavları dahil merkezi düzeyde, Sağlık Bakanlığı tarafından yürütülmekte ve denetlenmektedir. Doktora ve uzmanlık eğitimi arasındaki organizasyonel farkların varlığı söz konusudur. Ama en temel fark doktora eğitiminin hedefinin tümüyle akademik olması, uzmanlık eğitiminin ise akademik temelin yanı sıra sağlık hizmet sunumu beklentisidir.   

In postgraduate education, two pathways exist: medical speciality training and doctoral (PhD) education. Both yield equivalent outcomes with respect to academic promotion. However, they differ substantially in the way the training is organized and in its outcomes. Although the general regulations of the Council of Higher Education (YÖK) apply, doctoral education is conducted at the local level, through institutes affiliated with university rectorates. The entrance examinations are administered entirely locally, and the training itself is carried out in the same manner. Medical specialty training, by contrast, is administered and supervised centrally by the Ministry of Health, including its entrance examinations. Thus, organizational differences exist between doctoral and specialty training. The most fundamental difference, however, is that the aim of doctoral education is purely academic, whereas specialty training carries the expectation of health service delivery in addition to its academic foundation.
